Chimamanda Adichie Condemns Nigeria's Anti- Gay Law in New Article! *MUST READ*

$

The award winning writer wrote this article airing her views on the new Anti-gay law in Nigeria. She titled this one'Why can’t he just be like everyone else?' Read below;

I will call him Sochukwuma. A thin, smiling boy who liked to play with us girls at the university primary school in Nsukka. We were young. We knew he was different, we said, ‘he’s not like the other boys.’ But his was a benign and unquestioned difference; it was simply what it was. We did not have a name for him. We did not know the word ‘gay.’ He was Sochukwuma and he was friendly and he played oga so well that his side always won.

            In secondary school, some boys in his class tried to throw Sochukwuma off a second floor balcony. They were strapping teenagers who had learned to notice, and fear, difference. They had a name for him. Homo. They mocked him because his hips swayed when he walked and his hands fluttered when he spoke. He brushed away their taunts, silently, sometimes grinning an uncomfortable grin. He must have wished that he could be what they wanted him to be. I imagine now how helplessly lonely he must have felt. The boys often asked, “Why can’t he just be like everyone else?”
    Possible answers to that question include ‘because he is abnormal,’ ‘because he is a sinner, ‘because he chose the lifestyle.’ But the truest answer is ‘We don’t know.’ There is humility and humanity in accepting that there are things we simply don’t know. At the age of 8, Sochukwuma was obviously different. It was not about sex, because it could not possibly have been – his hormones were of course not yet fully formed – but it was an awareness of himself, and other children’s awareness of him, as different. He could not have ‘chosen the lifestyle’ because he was too young to do so. And why would he – or anybody – choose to be homosexual in a world that makes life so difficult for homosexuals?

          The new law that criminalizes homosexuality is popular among Nigerians. But it shows a failure of our democracy, because the mark of a true democracy is not in the rule of its majority but in the protection of its minority – otherwise mob justice would be considered democratic. The law is also unconstitutional, ambiguous, and a strange priority in a country with so many real problems. Above all else, however, it is unjust. Even if this was not a country of abysmal electricity supply where university graduates are barely literate and people die of easily-treatable causes and Boko Haram commits casual mass murders, this law would still be unjust. We cannot be a just society unless we are able to accommodate benign difference, accept benign difference, live and let live. We may not understand homosexuality, we may find it personally abhorrent but our response cannot be to criminalize it.

               A crime is a crime for a reason. A crime has victims. A crime harms society. On what basis is homosexuality a crime? Adults do no harm to society in how they love and whom they love. This is a law that will not prevent crime, but will, instead, lead to crimes of violence: there are already, in different parts of Nigeria, attacks on people ‘suspected’ of being gay. Ours is a society where men are openly affectionate with one another. Men hold hands. Men hug each other. Shall we now arrest friends who share a hotel room, or who walk side by side? How do we determine the clunky expressions in the law – ‘mutually beneficial,’ ‘directly or indirectly?’

              Many Nigerians support the law because they believe the Bible condemns homosexuality. The Bible can be a basis for how we choose to live our personal lives, but it cannot be a basis for the laws we pass, not only because the holy books of different religions do not have equal significance for all Nigerians but also because the holy books are read differently by different people. The Bible, for example, also condemns fornication and adultery and divorce, but they are not crimes.
For supporters of the law, there seems to be something about homosexuality that sets it apart. A sense that it is not ‘normal.’ If we are part of a majority group, we tend to think others in minority groups are abnormal, not because they have done anything wrong, but because we have defined normal to be what we are and since they are not like us, then they are abnormal. Supporters of the law want a certain semblance of human homogeneity. But we cannot legislate into existence a world that does not exist: the truth of our human condition is that we are a diverse, multi-faceted species. The measure of our humanity lies, in part, in how we think of those different from us. We cannot – should not – have empathy only for people who are like us.

          Some supporters of the law have asked – what is next, a marriage between a man and a dog?’ Or ‘have you seen animals being gay?’ (Actually, studies show that there is homosexual behavior in many species of animals.) But, quite simply, people are not dogs, and to accept the premise – that a homosexual is comparable to an animal – is inhumane. We cannot reduce the humanity of our fellow men and women because of how and who they love. Some animals eat their own kind, others desert their young. Shall we follow those examples, too?

          Other supporters suggest that gay men sexually abuse little boys. But pedophilia and homosexuality are two very different things. There are men who abuse little girls, and women who abuse little boys, and we do not presume that they do it because they are heterosexuals. Child molestation is an ugly crime that is committed by both straight and gay adults (this is why it is a crime: children, by virtue of being non-adults, require protection and are unable to give sexual consent).

            There has also been some nationalist posturing among supporters of the law. Homosexuality is ‘unafrican,’ they say, and we will not become like the west. The west is not exactly a homosexual haven; acts of discrimination against homosexuals are not uncommon in the US and Europe. But it is the idea of ‘unafricanness’ that is truly insidious. Sochukwuma was born of Igbo parents and had Igbo grandparents and Igbo great-grandparents. He was born a person who would romantically love other men. Many Nigerians know somebody like him. The boy who behaved like a girl. The girl who behaved like a boy. The effeminate man. The unusual woman. These were people we knew, people like us, born and raised on African soil. How then are they ‘unafrican?’

           If anything, it is the passage of the law itself that is ‘unafrican.’ It goes against the values of tolerance and ‘live and let live’ that are part of many African cultures. (In 1970s Igboland, Area Scatter was a popular musician, a man who dressed like a woman, wore makeup, plaited his hair. We don’t know if he was gay – I think he was – but if he performed today, he could conceivably be sentenced to fourteen years in prison. For being who he is.) And it is informed not by a home-grown debate but by a cynically borrowed one: we turned on CNN and heard western countries debating ‘same sex marriage’ and we decided that we, too, would pass a law banning same sex marriage. Where, in Nigeria, whose constitution defines marriage as being between a man and a woman, has any homosexual asked for same-sex marriage?

                  This is an unjust law. It should be repealed. Throughout history, many inhumane laws have been passed, and have subsequently been repealed. Barack Obama, for example, would not be here today had his parents obeyed American laws that criminalized marriage between blacks and whites. An acquaintance recently asked me, ‘if you support gays, how would you have been born?’ Of course, there were gay Nigerians when I was conceived. Gay people have existed as long as humans have existed. They have always been a small percentage of the human population. We don’t know why. What matters is this: Sochukwuma is a Nigerian and his existence is not a crime.

Nollywood Film Producer Uduak Isong Voices her Opinion on the Anti-Gay Law

In this article she tittled "Can I Sit on the Fence?", the prolific film writer/producer Uduak Isong-Oguamanam, says she was inspired to write this after reading Chimamanda's article this morning, condemning the criminalization of homosexuality in Nigeria. Read below;

Long ago, when I was an active blogger, I wrote on homosexuality. My stance was and still is: I cannot judge what I do not understand. This is probably one of those articles one should use an alias but I will brave the verbal stones that will be thrown my way, and use my name. I've heard from the pro-gay and the anti-gay. Now, I will attempt to speak for those of us who are neither here nor there. I'm curious about what brought on the bill. Did an important wife find her husband in bed with another man? In Nigeria we have learnt that there's always more to it than meets the eye.
I think a lot of the anti-gay people are extreme in their stance but so are the pro-gays. I do not have the right to decide for you your sexual preferences but neither do you have the right to insist that I accept them. If it is live and let live as you claim, then should you not also let me live? I think both parties should give each other respect and perhaps space, then the road might begin to straighten out.
Since the announcement of the gay bill, many have lost friends. I, personally have unfollowed and muted several gay activists on twitter. I do not have anything against people. How can I? But I have everything against someone trying to beat me up to accept or fight the homosexuality battle.
I stand against violence against women and rape etc. Some other people are fighting poverty and global hunger etc. We all reserve the right to choose our battles. If you want to fight for the gay, by all means, do so. But to insist that I must do so with you is to trample on the same right of choice that you accuse us of trampling upon yours.
In our very gossip filled industry, I have come to believe that some people are gay for pay. We hear stories of who is sleeping with one big man or the other. I cannot judge them anymore than I can judge the married woman who spends weekends in Abuja, sometimes to her husband's knowledge. Perhaps some people are biologically homosexual. I do not know.
I have friends that are gay. I love them dearly and cannot be bothered about their sexuality, the same way I do not expect them to be bothered about mine. But it seems to me that often, the gay is asking to be defined by his sexuality. This is what bothers me.
I will only define people by the content of their character; not by their religion, nor class, nor race, nor sexual preference nor anything else the world might come up with tomorrow.
I agree that criminalising homosexuality is unjust and unfair. It should not be our business what two consenting adults get up to particularly behind their closed doors.
At a recent festival, a gay film was screened, when two teenage girls started to kiss, I stepped out. I was uncomfortable. The act makes me uncomfortable. I will not apologise for my discomfort. But my discomfort does not in any way make it a criminal offence.
I refuse to judge homosexuals. The Lord alone reserves that right, and He will do so on judgement day. But if you're asking me to accept homosexuality; I can't. Forgive me.

An Open Letter to Omotola Jalade Ekheinde...

This was written by Netng correspondent Alonge Osagie. Read below;

"Last week, Omotola Jalade-Ekiende went on a rant on social media in response to entertainment bloggers who described her daughter Meraiah Ekeinde as ‘Hot and sexy’.
The Nollywood actress and 2013 Time Magazine Icon barked at online media, chastising them for visiting her 14-year-old daughter’s Instagram page, culling her photos and spreading them all over the internet.
‘Thank you to everyone who wished Meraiah a happy birthday. However, going to a 14 year old’s ‘private’ online accts to post her pictures for public viewing is totally inappropriate. Her father and I are horrified as parents and guardian that a minor’s picture can be paraded online as ‘hot’ ,’sexy’ etc.’, she wrote on her official Facebook page.

    It should be noted that as at the time Meraiah’s photos were posted by bloggers, her Instagram account was set on ‘public’.
Dear Omotola, I’d like to say that the media has done nothing, absolutely nothing wrong and do not owe you an apology for publicising your daughter’s photos. You should be the last person pointing fingers as it clearly shows you’ve scored a D minus in raising this cute kid..
Meraiah Ekeinde is four years away from adolescence but by merely studying her Instagram page, you’d be amazed at the kind of photos a 14-year-old girl puts up – we are talking sexualised seflies, showing off her ‘curves’, pouts, using hashtags like #StaySexy and posting memes containing vulgar language like the word ‘FUCK’.
I’m sure Meraiah means no harm and she is in the early stage of youthful exuberance but dear Omotola, do you approve of an underage turning up her sexiness in the eye of the public? Why hasn’t she been cautioned to take down these sexually suggestive photos? Why is it that you have failed to understand that Meraiah, a minor, has no business trying to act like your fellow desperate Nollywood actresses on social media?
Instead, you choose to be horrified by the media calling her ‘Hot and sexy’, accusing them of intruding on you poor little girl’s privacy. Madam, you’ve got it all wrong. Are those photos ‘Hot and sexy’? Oh my, yes they damn are!
It’s a shame that up till now, these photos haven’t been deleted. It’s a shame that you’ve asked the media to behave like adults and draw the line when you’ve not acted in the same faith.
In February 2012, US rapper Nas’ 18-year-old daughter Destiny Jones posted a box of condoms on her Instagram page. The media and community attacked Nas and his baby mama Carmen Bryan for the post which was subsequently taken off. Nas didn’t come out defending his daughter or attacking the media, he rather blamed himself on his song ‘Daughters’.
Dear Omotola, you always profess the idea of changing the world, it’s time to start from your house; clean it up.

*For those who don't still understand what Osagie is yapping about, see the photos of Omotola's Daughter HERE and Omotola's harsh response HERE

After removing everything concerning them on his social media accounts a few days ago, it has officially been announced that Skales is no longer an artiste of EME Records. His record label revealed that his contract has expired and they decided not to renew it, because he wasn't profitable to them any more. You'll remember he was signed alongside Wizkid in 2010, as a rapper but later switched into music. Despite not being under any record label, he still remains under M.et.tal management for now.

An Open Letter to Tiwa Savage. . .

$

0

The prolific film maker Charles Novia, wrote this piece to Tiwa concerning her recent face off with the Nigerian Police. Read below;

Sometimes a celebrity assumes a self-imposed larger-than-life image and believes he or she is above the law or above reproach. If the reports of Tiwa Savage's arrest are factual, with the a report by thenetng suggesting that they are, then a 'bringing down to earth' psychological regimen is needed for the newly-wedded singer. One major fact to note by celebrities and other citizens, DO NOT SCREW WITH THE NIGERIAN POLICE. No matter how much you hold them in disdain or think they are inept, those guys operate within the ambits of the law or laws which they can conjure to empower their case. If you have ever 'visited' a typical Police Station in Naija to settle or aid a case, you will know what I am saying.
In fairness to the Police, they are quite friendly and accommodating when celebrities are involved and treat artistes with respect more than other citizens but that should not be taken for granted by the artistes in any way.
There is what I term ' a galloping stumble' in the career of artistes which comes full circle most times. An artiste attains dizzying heights in his or her career within a time capsule of promise, possibilities and potential. Fame, endorsements, adulations and unbelievable stardom follow one after the other or even simultaneously for a hitherto backwater act. Having achieved such within a short and unsolicited for career, the artiste finds himself or herself on a fast lane. On that lane, all caution is thrown to the wind and a breakneck speed is allowed by the artiste on that lane. But more-often-than-not there would be a stumble along the way; a big pothole to rein excesses. For the smart ones, they slow down. For the others who believe they are delirious gods on earth, they go faster. Most times, doom beckons. A career doom or even a fatal one.
What if Tiwa had encountered one of those trigger-happy Policemen who, without thinking, could have fired off a shot at her? Has she and her handlers thought about that? It is all well for her husband to wave it off as a joke as he did in the report by Thenetng. But if indeed it isn't a publicity stunt ( and I don't think it is) then this is where her brand handling should be put under a microscope. Personally, I love Tiwa's music and admire her seeming humility, having been opportuned to speak with her and her then Manager a year ago on a proposed project then. I think she must be commended for blazing a trail in a male-dominated music industry and making a huge success out of it too. And it is because I like her and believe she still has a lot to offer to our entertainment sector that I wrote this.
Let's just say I hope this little advice fills the potholes on her lane. Or maybe it should serve to erect a speed breaker?
