Nigeria's Inspector General of Police Mohammed Abubakar has been issued a statement by the presidency to go on a compulsory leave. The letter signed by the president which was issued through the Secretary to the Government, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, on Monday May 12th asked the IG to hand over to his immediate subordinate, Suleiman Fakai, who is the Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of Finance and Administration. This terminal leave is over allegations of widespread insecurity in the country under his watch and poor police performance under his leadership. He was actually due to complete his tenure in July and resign that same month based on the mandatory retirement age after serving in the Nigerian Police Force for 35 years. Although, he had earlier applied for an extention of his tenure, he was turned down by the presidency.
